Introduction

The members of the Schools who practice psychoanalysis can do so:
- As members of the School, admitted as such under the responsibility of the Council, having declared their work as analysts. They are enrolled in the Directory of the School under PA (practicing analysts).
- In as much as an ad hoc commission – called the Commission of Guarantee – endorses them as emerging from the formation dispensed by the School, granting them the title of AMS (Analyst Member of the School), under which they are enrolled.

On the other hand, the degree of AS (Analyst of the School) is granted for three years, to those who, at the end of the procedure that takes place via the device of the Pass, are judged by the Cartel of the Pass as being able to testify on the crucial problems of psychoanalysis before the analytic community.

As regards associate members or affiliates, they are only enrolled with the degree of their previous training and the role performed in their working life.

The most important reference text on members’ titles is The Proposition of October 9, 1967 on the psychoanalyst of the School, in which Lacan states:

"Let’s remember what exists among us.

First, a principle: the psychoanalyst is only authorized by himself, This principle is inscribed in the original Texts of the School and decides its stand.

This does not exclude the School to guarantee that a psychoanalyst comes from its training.

The School can do it on its own account.

And the analyst may want this guarantee, if this is the case, he can only go further: become responsible of the progress of the School, become a psychoanalyst of his own experience.

Seen from this perspective, it is recognized that in the future they will answer to these two ways:

I. The AMS or ANALYST MEMBER OF THE SCHOOL, constituted as such by the mere fact that the School recognizes him as a psychoanalyst who has proved to be such.

This constitutes the guarantee, firstly distinguished, coming from the School. The initiative is up to the School, where he is admitted on the basis of a project of work and without taking into account where he comes from or qualifications.

A practicing analyst is at the beginning registered in it with the same degree as when he is enrolled as medical doctor, ethnologist and tutti quanti.

II. The AS or Analyst of the School, who is considered to be among those who can testify on the crucial problems of the burning issues in which they are for the analysis, especially so, since they themselves are in the task, or at least on the way of its resolution. This is a place which implies the wish of taking it up: you can only be in it upon demand of fact or form.

It is thus established that the School can guarantee the relation of the analyst with the training that it provides.
